Being a Fire Fighter, I am often times told that I am a hero, along with police, EMT’s and members of the armed forces.  Just because of our profession or our part-time hobbies we are labeled “Hero’s”.  What about mothers or fathers?  Those that raise their kids in a good home and up bringing, are they not heroes as well?

Someone in the military who goes off into battle does it for a reason, might be because they feel obligated to serve like their fathers and grand fathers before them did.  Or maybe it was their upbringing, playing war games as a child, they joined searching for that same excitement.  Maybe they were running from something, whatever the reason, a true war hero comes more out of fear than the ploy to be a hero, so often times they find themselves in a situation that calls for quick action to save themselves or their friends.  Had they been giving a minute or two to think about what was happening, they probably would not have done the valor act.

We as Fire Fighters, might be living out our childhood more than most.  We get to drive big trucks, run red lights and blast the siren at 2am.  Just to get to a building that is spitting fire out the doors and windows and we run inside.  WOW

Yes we might save someones life, we might rescue a dog or cat or cut someone out of a car, but we do it because we want to.  We live for the pumped up feeling we get as we turn the corner and see flames searching for the next thing to consume.  But once the fire is out, once we are back at the station, we are filled with paperwork, and tasks getting ready for the next alarm.  And what about those people we had saved?  The next day they could be hit by a train, fall from a cliff or die from food poison.   So much for saving that one.

No I am convinced and have been for a while that the true heroes of this world, the ones we should be clapping for or inviting to buy their supper are those who stand for the Lord.  The men and women who will share the gospel to anyone without fear of ridicule.  These are the true heroes.

I might rush in and pull someone from a burning house, I might swim out and grab a young child before they drowned but the next day, if the Lord chooses they will be gone again.

But if any solider of the Lord’s army stands true and shares His word, and that person if they accept that word, they will be saved for ever and ever.

Mark 8:34-37

34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.

36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

I or any one can save a life each day of their career but in the end, that same person will die.  That person may be saved 100 times in your life but in the end, no one can save them.

But if you or I was to share the true gospel with that same person, if we were to plant the seed of salvation, or water that seed which had been planted before and that person seeks the Lord and repents, they will be saved forever.  A far cry better than to just live a few more years in this world.

Next time before you call me a hero or anyone else a hero, ask how many seeds have they planted that day.
